NJ CCS 1.3.8.D.5. – Examine the characteristics, thematic content, and symbolism found in works of art from diverse cultural and historical eras, and use these visual statements as inspiration for original artworks.
Objectives:
- Students will determine the materials and mediums most appropriate in the creation of a narrative art.
- Students will demonstrate mastery level knowledge of grayscale value.
Day One:
Class Discussion – class will discuss how they think dreams occur and why they are difficult to remember, recall, and visualize. Then, teacher will provide symbolism information about some specific recurring dreams or nightmares.
Project Introduction – Teacher will provide examples of the upcoming project in which students will use charcoal and/or india ink to create a depiction of a dream or nightmare they have had.
Day Two:
Demonstration: Teacher will demonstrate different composition ideas to give artwork a dream-like mood.
Independent Practice – Students will complete 3 thumbnail sketches of their ideas.
Day 3:
Interactive Demonstration – Teacher will ask students to follow along in an explorative demonstration about using charcoal.
Day 4:
Interactive Demonstration – Teacher will ask students to follow along in an explorative demonstration about using ink. Finally, she will demonstrate how to combine ink and charcoal successfully.
Day 5:
Independent Practice – Students will begin adding their chosen medium to their drawings.
Day 6:
Students will complete a working session.
Day 7:
Students will complete a working session and curate their finished projects.
