7th Grade Origami Principles of Design

***DISCLAIMER: This is a lengthy unit. It covers a lot, but can be easily modified.***

NJ CCS – 1.3.8.D.6

Synthesize the physical properties, processes, and techniques for visual communication in multiple art media (including digital media), and apply this knowledge to the creation of original artworks.

Objectives:

  • Students will express one principle of design clearly.
  •  Students will recall knowledge of tints and shades.
  •  Students will demonstrate an origami tutorial for their peers.

Day One:

Introduction – Teacher will ask students about their experience with origami, then share about her recent success with origami.

Direct Instruction – Teacher will guide students through creating an origami heart.

Day Two:

Independent Practice – Teacher will guide students through making an origami butterfly.

Day Three:

Student-led Instruction – Students will volunteer to teach origami demonstrations to their classmates.

Day Four:

Direct Instruction – Teacher will guide students through making a paper balloon.

Day Five:

Project Element Introduction – Teacher will distribute definition sheets for the Principles of Design. Then, students will discuss at their tables how each principle is unique. Each table will determine two principles that are similar, then share with the class what makes them unique.

Day Six:

Independent Practice – Using the Principles of Design sheets at each table, students will begin to sketch their origami designs in an arrangement that depicts one specific Principle.

Day Seven:

Conferencing – Each student will have a brief conference with the teacher to determine which steps they need to take to move forward with their project and to ensure that they are clearly depicting their chosen principle of design.

Day Eight:

Teacher will review painting from observation with specific focus on creating tints and shades using 1 tone and white. Demonstration will introduce subtle shading based on the creases of origami paper.

Days Nine and Ten:

Students will complete independent work sessions using acrylic paint on their canvas papers to complete their artwork.
